Since I assume a general audience, I used Hemingway as short-hand for “American way” and other writers noted by Ward, most of whom a general readership wouldn’t recognize. If you feel such a short-hand is off-base, I certainly understand. I taught American literature and this novel for a couple of decades, and feel the comment for non-lit people is fair.
